Cyprus is situated in the eastern corner of the Mediterranean at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. The third largest of all the Mediterranean Islands, ranking in size after Sicily and Sardinia, its area is 9,251 square kilometres, stretching 240 km from West to East and 96 km from North to South with a permanent population of approximately 700,000 people. Cyprus is steeped in history dating back to the Neolithic Era, through the Greco-Roman period with its myths and legends to conquests by Richard III and the crusaders. Later, occupation by the Turks and finally once again by England has created an intriguing country with character and traditions all its own. Numerous historical sites are to be found rubbing shoulders with modern cities. Seen as a whole, Cyprus emerges as a fascinating mosaic of time, combining the old with the new and the past with the present. It is also an Island of great scenic beauty with a startling variety of landscapes from sandy beaches to charming, unspoiled villages nestling in vine clad foothills, from fertile citrus and olive groves to lofty forests of pine and cedar. Cyprus boasts a unique climate, mild winters and hot dry summers. The average daytime temperature in winter is around 12 -15°c and 26 - 32°c in summer. Considered to have one of the most agreeable climates in the region, Cyprus enjoys approx. 340 sunny days a year and during the six months of summer, the sun shines for an average of 11 hours a day, ideal for sailing, hiking, diving and golf, very rarely does the weather interfere in Cyprus....and if it does, it’s never for very long. Whilst Greek is the official language of the republic, English is widely spoken and understood all over the Island. A further legacy of the colonial past is the adoption of street and driving directions in both Greek and English. Cyprus has two international airports, Larnaca to the north and Paphos to the south of the island, both are approximately 4hr flying time from the U.K. There are currently over 40 airlines operating some 260 flights per week with the frequency and cost continuously improving. The modern motorways linking the larger towns are excellent and petrol costs roughly half of its UK equivalent price. Public transport is also cheap and efficient. Postal services, telephones, Internet and satellite TV are on a par with the U.K. and Cytnet (Cyprus Mobile Telecoms Network) offers one of the lowest tariffs in Europe. The banking system in Cyprus is modern, efficient and staff speaks English. There are a number of both domestic and foreign banks operating on the Island including: Bank of Cyprus, Cyprus Popular Bank, Hellenic Bank, National Bank of Greece, together with a number of U.K. offshore branches. Non – Cypriot citizens may open foreign currency and local deposit accounts without difficulty. Major credit cards, such as Visa, MasterCard and American Express are widely used in Cyprus.
