Development Summary
Local Area
The Advent Ancoats development forms part of the £100m regeneration of the Ancoats area in Manchester. A former industrial district, the architectural legacy of that era remains in the area’s mills, and provides a unique identity from which a thriving area for the 21st century can be developed. The Ancoats area will become a booming community, combining various types of housing, businesses and recreational facilities. Striking new builds will fuse effortlessly with renovated mill buildings to create a neighbourhood of unique beauty and startling engineering. Plans are being made for new public spaces, galleries and museums, and as new businesses are attracted to the area jobs and housing demands are set to increase greatly. Ancoats will be promoted as a lively but safe place, perfect for families and commuters. It is expected that over the next few years total investment will be in the order of over £200million, with talks being held to incorporate a unique leisure complex including a casino, arena and ice rink in East Manchester.
This development borders the Ancoats Urban Village redevelopment, which will be subject to substantial commercial improvement and major public transport investment, improving connections into the city centre. Both restoration and new build projects are now underway as part of this regeneration initiative and will create a vibrant mixed-use area on the edge of the city centre. To the North of the site is the Ashton Canal corridor, which contains a number of important historic industrial buildings within a canal side environment, which is also the focus of substantial regeneration and investment. This area is part if the route of the recently approved Metrolink line from Manchester Piccadilly to Ashton-Under-Lyne. Situated adjacent to the site is the former Star Iron Works, acquired by Manchester City Council to facilitate the first Metrolink station on this route. By 2008 Manchester’s this will provide direct access to the city centre in less than three minutes from the tram stop. Advent will further enhance what is becoming recognised as an emerging, but secondary residential district of Manchester City Centre and falls within the East Manchester Regeneration Zone. The scheme is within easy walking distance of both the Millennium and Northern Quarters, as well as a number of major established mixed-use commercial, leisure and retail developments. The scheme also accesses the M60 ring road in less than 10 minutes, and links to the UK’s extensive motorway network (M62, M56, M61 are all within 15/20 minutes from the site). Manchester’s international airport is less than 20 minutes drive time away with flights to over 125 cities world wide
