Development Summary
Local Area
The name Kirk-by means Church and Settlement. It"s origin may have taken place prior to the Norse who are believed to have arrived via Ireland around 900 A.D. It is further believed that a simple Chapel existed here about 870 A.D., this tradition being inscribed on a stone at the base of the Cross which was erected within the present Kirkby parish church grounds in 1875.

Knowsley is superbly situated for both business and pleasure. Located at the heart of the North West of England it contains some of Europe "s finest transport networks - road, rail, sea and air. Yet within an hours drive, there is access to world famous beauty spots such as the Lake District and the internationally known cities of Liverpool and Manchester, which contain entertainment, sporting and cultural facilities second only to London.

With such a wealth of services on your doorstep, both your business and personal needs are fully catered for.

Motorways : Motorways form the spine of Knowsley and all our business locations are alongside the network. The M57 and M62 motorways and the A580 East Lancashire road intersect in the region, giving rapid access to the M6 and the rest of the UK within a day"s drive.

Airport: Liverpool (John Lennon) Airport is the closest regional airport. It is one of Europe"s fastest growing airports and has recently benefited from a £30 million new state of the art terminal, handling some of the largest freight in the U.K. while Manchester Airport (the country"s largest Airport outside London ) serves 5 continents, is a major international hub and is only 40 minutes away.

Trains: Main Stations are close by, with Euro Rail passenger connections from both Liverpool and Manchester , linking directly to London and Europe . There is also an extensive local network throughout the North West of England linking smaller towns and cities together.

The quality of life in the North West of England is unrivalled with a diverse range of leisure, cultural, educational and housing facilities. The world famous cities of Liverpool and Manchester are right on our doorstep, whilst within an hour"s drive you can travel to the equally world famous beauty spots of the Lake District, North Wales and the Peak District. 50% of Merseyside is green space, including internationally acclaimed nature reserves, country parks, beaches and the famous Knowsley Safari Park .

Sport on Merseyside is a passion. In the arts and entertainment field, North West England has more to offer than any other region outside London . Nightlife, music, theatre and cosmopolitan eating-places all combine to complete a quality of life second to none.

Neighbouring Liverpool has recently won the prestigious European Capital of Culture award ensuring the whole region will become even more vibrant and cosmopolitan, attracting visitors from all over the world.

From primary to secondary level, our schools have been established in their communities over many years, ensuring a continuity of education right up to postgraduate level and

beyond. Also, the North West boasts world-class universities in Manchester and Liverpool , with access to a large pool of graduate talent and research facilities.

Knowsley and surrounding areas provides an excellent choice of housing, from city centre living to houses in the smaller towns and rural villages close by, ensuring the standard of

living which makes it easy to attract and retain staff. Household names such as Delphi Delco, Jaguar, Kodak, Liverpool Football Club, News International, QVC and Telewest, indicate the diverse economy of the Knowsley area. Making products from cars to airplane components, fibre optics to telephone cables, or providing services from call centres to national newspapers, shows that what we have to offer appeals to companies far and wide.

From record levels of unemployment in the early 1980"s (22%), the Knowsley Economy in recent years has been transformed.

A recent independent report conducted by Regeneris Consulting ‘Merseyside Economic Review 1996-2001" shows how Knowsley"s growth has performed well in comparison to the rest of the Merseyside economy.

Knowsley has seen the fastest growth as follows, representing 31% of the Merseyside total:

Small and medium sized companies are considered to be the lifeblood of any economy and with more than 1,500 companies based in the area. Knowsley boasts a diverse and varied economic base. In fact, over 80% of our companies fall into this category and trade alongside the larger, better known names.

The Merseyside Economic Review, an independent study commissioned annually by The Mersey Partnership, has recently been produced in the first quarter of 2004, with the main findings for

• Between 1998 and 2002, Knowsley had the highest employment growth in the UK , with 35.4% over the period.
• Knowsley has a high concentration of manufacturing (14%), distribution (28.1%), construction (15.5%), transport and communication (7.6%) businesses.
• Emerging sectors for development in Knowsley were identified as Logistics/Distribution, Environmental Technologies, Innovative manufacturing, ICT, Health Care, Tourism and Construction.
• Over 56% of Knowsley"s employment base is located in companies employing over 200 people, which reflects the economic structure of the area.
• The mean household income rose from £20,300 (2002) to £22,300 (2003); however, despite this, the gap the level of mean income in Knowsley and the UK average grew larger (from -22.5% to -23.1%) during the same period.
• In 2003, Knowsley and Liverpool both saw unemployment fall by 0.9% which is encouraging in comparison with the UK "s performance (unemployment rates fell by 0.3%).
• Over the period 1994 to 2002 Merseyside out performed both the North West and UK in terms of the growth in business stock levels. Knowsley recorded the highest level of Start Up rates of any Merseyside authority in 2002, with a rate of 10.9% growth relative to VAT stock.
• Population decline in Knowsley has virtually halted (- 0.0% in 2002, cf - 0.1% in 2001); this is reflected in the Borough"s employment growth and growth in GVA performance.
